50th Anniversary of Law 13.010

The Honorable Congress of the Argentine Nation approved the bill on female suffrage for the whole country, being enacted on September 23, 1947 (Law 13,010). In Section 1, this law establishes that “Argentine women will have the same political rights and will be subject to the obligations that laws impose upon Argentine men”.

María Eva Duarte de Perón played a crucial role in the enactment of this law which was meant to fulfill the expectations of millions of female citizens and end up with discrimination against women. For this reason, she was widely recognized.

After fifty years of its enactment, the Central Bank of Argentina issued $1 (one PESO) and $0.50 (fifty cents) coins for circulation, both similar to those currently in circulation.

The presentation includes both coins packed in a cardboard case containing a short historical summary and their characteristic features. A series of 5,000 cases (numbered from 1 to 5,000) were manufactured for delivering both coins.

The image at the center is a portrait of Eva Perón, which was based on an original engraving by Master Mario Baiardi in 1952. The upper arch reads “REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA” (“ARGENTINE REPUBLIC”), and the lower arch, “MARIA EVA DUARTE de PERON”.

Reverse design

The upper arch reads “CINCUENTENARIO LEY N° 13.010” (“50th ANNIVERSARY OF LAW 13,010”) and “VOTO FEMENINO OBLIGATORIO” (“COMPULSORY FEMALE VOTE”), the center is hollowed out and shows number “50” with the word “cents” below, and the years “1947-1997” above. The exergue reads “1997”, the year of coinage, with bay laurel to each side. The coin has a vertical die axis (medal alignment).

On both sides, “1947” appears on the left side, and “1997” on the right side. The exergue contains the coinage year: “1997”.
