International Polar Year 2007-2008

The International Polar Year 2007-2008 seeks to underline the importance of making empirical observations and scientific research focused on the polar regions of the globe, which keep a record of climate changes across geological times.

Research works are coordinated at an international level so that data may be shared by every scientist and laboratory, thus gaining insight about the Earth.

On the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year and the 125th anniversary of the First International Polar Year, Argentina has joined the International Polar Year 2007-2008 Commemorative Coin Program by issuing a silver coin as a way to share the work done by more than sixty countries. The coin was designed by Carlos Pedro Rodríguez Dufour.

Obverse Design

The center shows the Vicecomodoro Marambio Base of the Argentine Antarctica surrounded by the words “REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA BASE VICECOMODORO MARAMBIO” (“ARGENTINE REPUBLIC - VICECOMODORO MARAMBIO BASE”).

Reverse Design

In the upper arch, divided in two lines, the event being commemorated: “AÑO POLAR INTERNACIONAL 2007-2008” (“INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR 2007-2008”). The center shows the logo of the International Polar Year and the denomination—“5 PESOS”. The exergue displays the year of coinage—“2007”.
