50th Anniversary of the Death of Eva Duarte de Perón
María Eva Duarte was born on May 7, 1919 in Los Toldos (Province of Buenos Aires). She began her artistic career at the age of 15, and moved to the City of Buenos Aires in 1934. Ten years later, she met Juan Domingo Perón (who was then a colonel) and married him in 1945. Since her husband took office as president of Argentina, Evita started to play an influential role in government. She became the most beloved person among the working class, whom she called “descamisados” (literally, “shirtless”) and who benefited from her work and political action. Evita died of cancer on July 26, 1952, at the age of 33.
In honor of her memory, the Central Bank has issued gold and silver coins of "proof" quality, and cupronickel coins for circulation. These pieces were designed by Carlos Pedro Rodríguez Dufour, plastic artist at the Central Bank, and coined by Sociedad del Estado Casa de Moneda (the Argentine Mint).
A number of 5,000 coins out of those struck for circulation come in cardboard cases with a short bio along with a description of the coin. The edge of the coins so delivered is plain, whereas loose coins have a reeded edge.

Based on a design by Italian master Renato Garrasi, the obverse features Evita’s portrait surrounded by “MARÍA EVA DUARTE DE PERÓN” in the lower arch and “REPUBLICA ARGENTINA” (“ARGENTINE REPUBLIC”) in the upper arch.
Reverse Design
Designed by Carlos Pedro Rodríguez Dufour, plastic artist at the Central Bank, the reverse shows the faces of men, women and children holding a banner with the name “Evita”. In the lower right-hand section, the year “1952” and the year “2002” opposite; on the right, the numeral and the word “pesos” beneath.
