José de San Martín Banknote Wins International Award

This year, at the High-Security Printing Latin American Conference, the ARS1,000 banknote featuring the portrait of José de San Martín won the best banknote of the year award. This banknote is part of the new “Heroines and Heroes of the Nation” series and was put into circulation on July 21, 2023.

The Regional Banknote of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding achievement in the design, the technical sophistication, and the security of a banknote. The assessment criterion combines visual arts, the relevance of the overall design and the symbolism used to reflect the cultural heritage of the issuing country.

The BCRA together with Argentina’s Mint designed a new banknote series that represents the return of historical figures to paper money, thus honoring the national heroines and heroes who, at decisive times, forged our country.

The new “Heroines and Heroes of the Nation” series pays tribute to two figures in the same banknote, as follows:

ARS200: Martín Miguel de Güemes and Juana Azurduy

ARS500: María Remedios del Valle and Manuel Belgrano

In addition, the ARS100 banknote keeps the portrait of María Eva Duarte de Perón.
